For the Ecuadorians, the "Ruta del Sol" is a prized jewel on the crown representing Ecuador's abundant natural wonders.

This exotic coastline is preciously adored by Ecuadorians, yet too often goes unexplored by foreigners distracted by Ecuador's notable Andean vistas and the ecological wonders of the Galapagos.

More than just a playground for mating humpback whales as well as so many other diverse species, the coast of Ecuador boasts tropical rainforests, coral reefs, national park reserves, abundant seafood, distinct culture, and many long, virgin, utopic beaches.

The culture of the Costeños (inhabitants of the coast), live a markedly different existence in harmony with the ocean and the bounty it bares. Many communities base their livelihood on fishing yet, despite the abundance of catch in this part of the pacific, they have maintained their humility and respect for the sea. Resistant to the greed and destruction of the modern fishing industry that threaten their existence, these artisans catch much the same way their ancestors have for centuries.

Manta

Manta, the focal point of the "Ruta del Sol", is central to many of the best wave spots on this exotic coast.

Epic waves aside, this beautiful sunny city finds itself nestled amongst many of Ecuador's more interesting ecological and cultural sites. The successful fishing culture in Manta and surrounding has vaulted this 5th largest city in Ecuador to 3rd most important economically as well as the primary port.

Consequently, with this small city so well employed, it enjoys a very low crime rate in comparison with most other latin-american cities of it's size. In Manta, few people fear walking home alone at night from the nightclub district.

By day, and particularly with northern swells, you can find a wave to surf right at the local beach, or catch a ride only a few minutes north or south of the city to find great waves. Only 10 minutes south of Manta is the picturesque fishing town of San Mateo where the northern swells incite a freakishly long, pure wave.

If you can possibly find yourself bored with too much surfing, there is a vast array of day excursions or weekend tours that visit cultural and ecological sights surrounding Manta.

Montañita
